More Fun School Facts

I’m Alix and it’s my mission to help as many of the next generation as possible work in careers that make them want to jump out of bed and get started. Through hard earnt experience I offer support and hand holding where they may not have any. School is a place of learning and growing but, surprisingly (to me at least!), there are a few fun facts associated that I’m listing below, so, grab a snack and let’s look at the lighter side of education…

Around the world there are various interesting facts linked to education as follows:

First Public School in the U.S.: The Boston Latin School, founded in 1635, is the oldest public school in the United States. It still operates today – I learnt Latin in school, but don’t test me now!

Most Languages Spoken: The International School of Geneva in Switzerland offers instruction in more than 20 different languages, catering to its diverse student body from over 130 nationalities.

Unique Subjects: In Japan, students not only learn academic subjects but also practice cleaning their school as part of their daily routine, promoting responsibility and community spirit.

Forest Schools: In countries like Denmark and Sweden, "Forest Schools" are popular. These schools take students outdoors to learn about nature through hands-on experiences, regardless of the weather. I was keen on this fact until I read ‘regardless of the weather’.

Longest Summer Break: In Italy, students enjoy one of the longest summer breaks in the world, lasting about three months from mid-June to mid-September. Sign me up.

Oldest University: The University of Bologna in Italy, founded in 1088, is often regarded as the oldest university in the world still in operation.

School Lunches: In France, school lunches are considered part of the educational experience. Students often enjoy multi-course meals prepared by chefs, and nutrition education is a key component of their school day. This surely tops learning Latin?

School Uniforms: In many countries, school uniforms are a norm, makes pupils easier to spot – especially on trips out.

Finland's Education System: Finland is renowned for its excellent education system, which emphasises creativity and critical thinking over standardised testing. Finnish students have shorter school days and more recess time compared to many other countries. My kinda school.

Mountain School: In the Swiss Alps, there are mountain schools where students are taught about mountaineering and environmental stewardship, combining traditional education with outdoor skills. Après ski anyone?

These facts highlight the diversity and richness of educational experiences across the globe. But imagine taking all the ‘good bits’, combining them and running that school! I reckon it would soon be the largest school in the world.
